Chinese state media say a coal mine blast in southwestern China has left 12 people dead and two more injured. The gas explosion occurred Friday night in Pingba county in Guizhou province. It says the coal mine was operating illegally and that the operators lied about the number of trapped miners and deaths. An investigation is under way. A work safety official from the city of Anshun, which administers Pingba, says the mine is licensed and operates privately. The official gave only his last name of Lin, as is customary among low-level Chinese government employees. China's mines are the deadliest in the world. Authorities have tightened safety in recent years, but regulations are often ignored.

Description:

A bus carrying a high school girls softball team overturned Friday in far-western Kentucky, injuring several students. Kentucky State Police say the school bus was carrying the Union County High School girls' softball team and had 28 people on board when the accident occurred on U.S. 60 just before 5 p.m. CDT, in Livingston County, along the Ohio River. The bus ran off the right shoulder, then swerved to the other side of the road, rotating 180 degrees before rolling on to its side, State Police Trooper Richie Wright said Friday night. Wright said 25 of those on board were taken to local hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. One patient was airlifted from the scene, but it was not due to serious injuries, Wright said. "When you have 25 injured, that takes a lot of resources from a lot of counties," Wright said. "By the time they had that many patients, they needed the helicopter to take one to the hospital."

Officials expressed relief that more of those on board weren't seriously injured. "Boy, they really dodged the bullet on this one," Kentucky Transportation Cabinet official Keith Todd said. Wright said he was unsure if a bend in the road near the crash scene caused the bus to go off the shoulder. Some passengers had to be extricated from the bus with emergency mechanical cutting tools. Four of the passengers on the bus were adults and the rest were students, Wright said. Police were diverting traffic several miles from the scene on US 60. State police were planning to do an accident reconstruction before reopening the road to traffic Friday night. The bus was on its way to Smithland for an evening softball game, and overturned about three miles from the city near the Illinois border. The Union County team was scheduled to play Livingston Central High School at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, according to its schedule on the school's website. The team's roster lists 15 players and five coaches. Injured people from the scene were being taken to two Paducah hospitals and Livingston County Hospital, Wright said. Emergency responders from three surrounding counties were called to the scene.

Description:

Mecklenburg County has confirmed this year's first case of rabies in a house pet after animal control officials had to euthanize a 6-week-old kitten earlier this week. Dr. Margurette Straley with Freedom Animal Hospital said her office alerted authorities after a family from the 28205 ZIP code, which includes Plaza Midwood, brought their kitten in for treatment on May 6. The family said the kitten hadn't eaten in three days, which Staley said is one of the first noticeable symptoms of the slow-moving and fatal disease. "They can't swallow," Straley said, noting the kitten only weighed about two pounds. The kitten was also erratically flopping side to side, pulling its head back and growling and loudly hissing, Straley said. The symptoms indicated severe neurological dysfunction, which Straley said occurs during the advanced symptoms of rabies. Straley contacted Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care and Control, which confirmed that the kitten tested positive. It was the fifth animal to test positive for rabies in Mecklenburg in 2013. The family that owned the kitten will have to receive a series of vaccinations, and their small dog has been quarantined. Melissa Knicely with Charlotte-Mecklenburg animal control said there are usually around 30 reported cases of rabies in the county each year, most commonly showing up in raccoons.

The discovery of rabid foxes and coyotes near Young has prompted the Gila County Health Department to issue a warning and ask people to report abnormal wildlife behavior in the Young and Pleasant Valley areas. A fox and coyote killed in Young in the past month have tested positive for rabies. In addition, a second fox found dead also tested positive. Health officials learned May 1 that a fox and coyote found at Forest Road and Mule Track Road, tested positive for rabies. The Gila County Rabies Control officers are responding to this situation and have increased surveillance in the Young area. No animal or human bites or exposures have been reported to the office. Gila County Public Health Director Michael O'Driscoll said, "when positives are found, there is an action plan in place to widen the surveillance area until no positives are being found, which gives a better assurance that the virus has been contained." O'Driscoll urged people to keep pets vaccinated against rabies.

A well-marked low pressure area lay over south-east Bay of Bengal on Friday and yet a major part of the Andhra Pradesh came under the grip of heat wave conditions with Mercury levels soaring at a number of places, particularly in Coastal Andhra and Telangana regions. Rentachintala (Guntur district) and Ramagundam (Karimnagar) recorded day temperature at 45 degrees Celsius, the highest in the State for the day. The temperature hovered around 42-44 degree C at many other places. Weather was mainly dry in Rayalaseema region. An official said there was no indication if the well-marked low pressure area would intensify into a depression and if so, its likely impact areas in Andhra Pradesh. The low pressure, however, would cause moderate to heavy rains in parts of Tamil Nadu. The Andhra Pradesh Met Office issued warning to the effect that the heat wave conditions would prevail in Nellore, Prakasam, Guntur and Krishna districts in Coastal Andhra and in Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Medak, Nalgonda and Adilabad in Telangana on Saturday. Description:

County environmental health officials urged campers and hikers to take simple steps to protect themselves Friday after routine monitoring and testing showed that a ground squirrel on Palomar Mountain had plague. The squirrel, which was trapped at the Cedar Grove Campground, marked the first case of plague found this year. Department of Environmental Health Director Jack Miller said it's not unusual to find plague in local mountains during warmer months - and that people could take simple steps to protect themselves from exposure. "The big thing is to avoid contact with squirrels and the fleas that they can carry," Miller said. "Campers should set up tents away from squirrel burrows, and hikers and campers should never feed squirrels and warn their children not to play with squirrels." Plague is a bacterial disease of wild rodents, but it can be transmitted to people by fleas that feed on the blood of a sick animal and then bite humans. There have been no locally acquired human cases of plague reported in San Diego County. The County routinely monitors flea populations and takes measures to control those populations at campgrounds when necessary to reduce the potential for people coming into contact with them. Plague Warning signs are posted in all areas where plague has been confirmed.

Description:

Floods have swept away several bridges in Migori county. County residents fear for their lives as flash floods continue to wreak havoc. More than 10 people have been killed in the county. Several estates in Migori town have been cut off after the bridges on rivers Nyasare and Onyinjo were damaged. "With the constant rains every evening we are forced to rush home or risk being cut off as water overflows the culverts," Brian Okoth, a resident, said. Three bridges have been affected with some of their sections being swept away by floods. Residents of Oruba, Milimani and Sangla estates in Suna West constituency and their Nyasare, Magina and Nyikendo estates in Suna East constituency are calling on their CDF committees to speed up building the bridges. "We need to build stronger and more bridges as constant rains and floods make the culverts weaker," said Valentine Ogongo, a local leader. In Nyatike district the Angubo bridge connecting Muhuru Bay, Sori and Lwanda towns have been weakened by constant flooding. "When it rains, the bridge overflows, blocking school children and bringing transport to a stand-still with most risking death as the bridge is weakened," Richard Bitonga, the police boss said. Bitonga said the condition of the bridge has affected distribution of relief food at camps as cars transporting food are sometimes forced to unpack longer distance from camps. "The government should take the plea by residents and the Red Cross officials to build the bridge on time," he said.

Description:

Thousands of people have flocked to the Omusati Region out of curiosity to view a small piece of meteorite that landed in a mahangu field in the village of Oshika, in Onesi Constituency, yesterday morning. The incident created fear and panic among villagers who suggested the 'strange object' had something to do with the recent commotion over the 12 South African aircraft that were released after days of grounding at Ondangwa Airport. The aircraft of South African origin were grounded for several days and then sent back to South Africa, because they had no permits to use Namibian airspace. People who came from all over the five northern regions, including the Kunene Region, flocking to Oshika, expressed fears that the tourists may have had something to do with the 'strange' object that fell in the mahangu field of Andreas Kamafo Ningilenimo.

"Maybe those people who came here with so many aircraft are responsible for this. Maybe that object is poisonous, we are scared, we won't even want to get close to it. If it is not taken away, we will not cultivate near it," said Selma Shikongo. A piece of meteorite, the of a size of a small ball or two human fists put together made such an impact that people within a radius of over 200km were able to hear the explosive impact, feel the resulting tremor and observe the blinding light that followed as it landed. A local engineer suggested that the object needs to be analysed to determine its chemical composition. According to the engineer, meteorites are rocks from outer space, and are referred to as meteors before they hit the ground. Once they hit the ground, the objects that are made of metallic substances, are then referred to as meteorites.

"They burn because of the high velocity at which they travel, that is why they look like burned metal when they hit the ground," said the engineer who requested anonimity. The engineer further said meteors are very fast and heavy which justifies the explosive sound and vibration while still in the air and as they hit the ground. Selma Shikongo, the wife of Ningilenimo, said the incident took place at around 4.30 yesterday morning when the family was still in bed. "First we saw a light through our bedroom window, which my husband brushed off, thinking that it was car passing by. We then heard a sizzling sound, then a loud bang. The children ran to me saying that something had fallen near the entrance of the house, and we should run away. While I was comforting the children, we saw another bluish light - and once more there was a sizzling sound, then everything went silent," Shikongo explained.

According to Shikongo, the family went out of the house later in the morning in search for what had fallen but they couldn't find it immediately. It was only after they returned from the homestead of their neighbours, that they noticed the object that looked like burned metal lying in their own mahangu field - just a few metres from their homestead. That is when they reported the incident to the police. People who flocked to the scene from as far as the Oshana and Ohangwena regions, also claimed to have seen the light, while some claim to have heard the loud bang and even felt tremors.

Description:

In Khatlon province locusts hit more than 50,400 hectares of farmland, in Sughd province more than 8,400 hectares, and in districts subordinate to the center - some 12,000 hectares,” Asia-Plus reported citing a source at the Tajik Ministry of Agriculture. The State Unitary Enterprise for Locust Control said locusts had reportedly hit more than 70,000 hectares of farmland in Tajikistan. In March specialists from Locust Control inspected 410,000 hectares of farmland across the country. For now they have treated with insecticides 43,596 hectares of locust-affected areas. Another 140,000 hectares will be treated with insecticides soon. The source at the Ministry of Agriculture said this year the national budget had earmarked more than 5.6 million somoni (about US $1.18 million) on combating pests. The Locust Control is being supported by international organizations such as the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Specialists say warm temperatures are a reason for the growing spread of locusts in the country.

Description:

Angola set up an emergency plan on Thursday for the southern province of Cunene, where an estimated 300 000 people are at risk of malnutrition because of a two-year-long drought. "The plan seeks to immediately provide medical assistance, food and drinking water for the most needy populations," the cabinet's economic commission said in a statement. Cunene, a semi-arid province which shares a border with Namibia to the south, depends largely on subsistence farming and cattle-raising. Provincial governor Antonio Didalelwa was cited by state-owned newspaper Jornal de Angola as saying more than 300 000 people, or approximately the entire known population of the province, are at risk of malnutrition. "We are worried about the situation. There is a lack of food and water for people and cattle," he said. "The people in the province are going through very tough times because it hasn't rained for two years and that is harming families, who depend on agriculture and cattle-raising." Angola, which is roughly twice the size of Texas, suffered heavily from drought last year.

Most concerned flooded households and basements, while firemen rushed to the aid of three persons trapped in their cars from gushing waters on roads. In the Sopaz area, firemen arrived in the nick of time to extract a driver just as his vehicle was about to be swept into a nearby river. The water level had reached the window of his vehicle, reports said. No injuries were reported. The Fire Department also removed debris from a number of locations after several trees were felled by strong winds. The Meteorological Service said the area around the island is currently under a low-pressure system. For the next three days, the service forecasts scattered showers and possible flash storms, mostly in mountain areas and the interior. Temperatures will be near normal for this time of the year, ranging from 20C in the mountains to 28C inland.

About 60 firefighters supported by bulldozers and three water-dropping helicopters are fighting the flames. The 75-hectare fire is just west of the hamlet. Warm temperatures, dry vegetation and gusty winds have created very high wildfire conditions in the Rocky Mountain House region. Workers at Nordegg Resort Lodge said they heard about the evacuation notice on the radio, but didn't know what it meant. A woman answering the phone said her boss told her to talk to Alberta Sustainable Resources and Development. She said there were workers from the department staying at the lodge and if it was that bad, the workers would have told them to leave.

Description:

Cook Strait was flooded with thousands of litres of raw sewage on Monday when heavy rains overwhelmed Wellington's waste water system. Over a six-hour period, 6229 cubic metres of unfiltered, untreated sewage-contaminated stormwater was spewed from Moa Pt through an old pipe - used only when there is too much pressure on the main system, Fairfax reported. At its worst point, the pipe - which hasn't been needed since 2006 - was discharging 2975 litres of untreated sewage into the ocean every second. A further 1.8km from there, another 13,942 cubic metres were pumped out of another pipe.Blaise St-Laurent, who went Kitesurfing in Lyall Bay the next day said the water was "pretty dodgy".

"You could taste it, and you could smell it on the beach," he told Fairfax. Capacity Infrastructure Services spokesman Alex van Paassen said the waste water that from both pipes was about seven parts stormwater to one part sewage. While signs were put up and water users were warned of the dangers of swimming, Mr van Paassen said it was up to "personal responsibility". He said people should know to stay out of the water 48 hours after heavy rain. The normal flow of sewage through Wellington's system is 700 litres a second and on Monday, this rose to 4443 litres per second in the main pipe. Because the treatment plant at Moa Pt can only treat 3000 litres per second, the remainder - not including what went through the old pipe - was discharged off the south coast after going through a process to remove large items. The problem was that "basically the system was overloaded", Mr van Paassen told Fairfax.

Description:

A power outage caused by lightning strike plunged thousands of households and businesses in Maungaturoto into darkness. Two Transpower-owned transmission circuits were struck by a lightning about 9.40am yesterday but electricity was back on after about 40 minutes. Transpower spokeswoman Rebecca Wilson said although repairs were carried out promptly, it took some time for the company to restore power to all those affected. About 80 lightning strikes an hour were recorded by Transpower engineers and Ms Wilson said the number indicated the severity of weather conditions in Northland from over the weekend. Students at Maungaturoto Primary School were affected shortly after starting their day. Principal Shane Campbell said: "We were in the middle of doing the school newsletter so we couldn't continue to work on them. Some classrooms were doing computer work which they couldn't continue as well." More than 100 lightning strikes accompanied rainfall of up to 100mm in some areas in Northland on Wednesday. The front moved southwards over the far southeast of Northland, Auckland and Coromandel yesterday, bringing heavy thundery rain south of Whangarei. A Waipu Cove resident's rain gauge measured 70mm of rain in one hour yesterday morning. Rain is expected in Whangarei, Kerikeri, Kaitaia and Dargaville for the rest of this week, with highs of 18C and lows of 10C.

Description:

About 6,000 people who live on the remote northern atolls of the Marshall Islands are facing acute water shortages as a severe drought worsens. The Pacific island nation this week declared a state of disaster in the north. Australia announced it would provide 100,000 Australian dollars ($101,000) for the emergency supply of desalination units. There is no end in sight to the drought, with fine weather forecast for at least the next 10 days. The drought has also affected the food supply, withering crops such as breadfruit, bananas and taro. National Disaster Committee chairman Casten Nemra says many families are surviving on a gallon of water a day and the situation is becoming "increasingly desperate." He says they've deployed ships carrying food, water and medical supplies to the affected islands.

Description:

A meteorite has hit another house in Connecticut just 19 days after one landed on a home in Wolcott. The meteorite crashed through a gutter and landed on Jay Langlois' lawn on Red Maple Lane in Waterbury. It was found still intact. It is about the same shape and size of an avocado, weighs 1.6 pounds and measures 2 inches by 2.5 inches by 4 inches. Langlois contacted the same Yale expert who confirmed the meteorite that crashed through a house in Wolcott on April 19. Dr. Stefan Nicolescu, the collections manager for the Mineralogy Division at the Yale Peabody Museum, confirmed a meteorite landed on Langlois' home. According to Nicolescu, the Waterbury meteorite is likely related to the one in Wolcott. It was found miles away from where the Wolcott meteorite landed. He hopes to run additional tests of the two.
